Academic Coaching & Learning Support

Surfhouse Puerto Rico students have the opportunity to receive one-on-one academic coaching, whether they are working on finishing high school, preparing for college or taking a break from college.
The goal of the coaching program is to empower students to become competent, self-directed, life-long learners. The academic coach works collaboratively with the student to assess the student’s learning style and strengths and weaknesses, to set goals and develop a coaching plan. The focus of coaching is to assist students in developing the specific skills they need to be successful in a college environment.

Coaching is most effective when students are enrolled in at least a couple of classes; executive function skills are not learned in isolation, they need to be applied directly to coursework in real time. Specifically, coaches can help students in the following areas:

  • Time management

  • Organization

  • Goal setting

  • Creating study plans

  • Motivation

  • Focus and concentration

  • Learning how to break projects into manageable tasks

  • Test preparation

  • Test-taking strategies

  • College level reading skills

  • College level writing skills

  • Note taking
